GUEST SPEAKER: ADJUNCT PROFESSOR JOAN SHELDON AM

Joan Sheldon is best known as being a former Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for the Arts in Queensland from the beginning of February 1996 until the end of June 1998.  She was the first woman in Queensland to hold this position and the first woman in Australia to be appointed Treasurer.  She was also the first woman to lead a Political Party in Queensland when she was elected as leader of the Liberal Party in 1991, a position she held for seven years.  She was elected into the Queensland Parliament for the seat of Caloundra, formally called Landsborough in 1990 and retired from Parliament in 2004. Joan was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2005.

 

She was born in Bundaberg where her grandfather was Mayor, was educated at Soubirous College Scarborough and subsequently went to the University of Queensland to become a Physiotherapist.  Joan owned a number of private practices until she was elected into Parliament.  She also obtained her licentiate in speech and drama from Trinity College of London and taught speech and drama for some years.  She has been happily married to her husband John for 46years and has three sons, two of whom are lawyers like their father and the youngest an Economist who is now an Investment Banker.

 

Joan has held a number of board positions since her retirement and has been appointed to a number of positions.  She was the Inaugural Executive-in-Residence for the Australian Institute of Management for five years, was appointed a Fellow of The Australian Institute of Management and The Australian Institute of company Directors and Chairman of The Sunshine Coast Events Centre, The Queensland Ballet, the Board of St.Leo’s College at the University of Queensland, and a Director of Forestry Plantations Queensland.

 

In 2008 she was appointed an Adjunct Professor in The School of Business at the Sunshine Coast University and Chair of The Queensland Community Fund Board for the Sunshine Coast.  Joan was appointed as the Inaugural Ethics and Integrity Officer for the Local Government Association of Queensland in 2011.
